The last hotel I stayed in

before COVID-19 was the San Francisco Proper for the 2019 Zephyr Designer Retreat. The hotel was designed by Kelly Wearstler, and it is a beautiful hotel. The most beautiful part? The combination of four different wallpapers, in four different styles, rhythms, and patterns, all hung in juxtaposed harmony in the same room.

As I laid in bed, I thought about the countless clients and people I’ve run into, who have had such a strong reaction and resistance to wallpaper period. I can’t even imagine the reaction they’d have to this space.

And now, today, on Juneteenth, I sit and think about the people who have had such strong reactions and rejections towards people of color. If only they knew that much like my wallpaper resistors, they were missing out on what beauty really is; a collective of diversity and differences all working together for a common and greater good.

The lesson?

There are two;

  • Our beauty and our strength as a human society lives in our differences. Therefore we celebrate, and not segregate one another.

  • Trust your designer. We know what we’re doing.

Let’s put some wallpaper in your space.
